Landmarks
‘s-Hertogenbosch is also known as the Cultural City of the South. With several iconic landmarks and unique museums, this picturesque city has a lot to offer.
A highlight which cannot be missed is the St. Jans Cathedral. This Gothic church was built between 1370 and 1529 and is decorated with extraordinary sculptured detail. Climb up the tower with 218 stairsteps and discover Den Bosch from the top.
From all the way up to all the way down; complete your visit with a characteristic open boat tour on the Binnendieze, the historical waters of Den Bosch which runs underneath the city center. You will be guided by one of the passionate volunteers for 1 hour for €10,- per person (open from April to October) who have a tremendous amount of stories and fun facts to share.
Go for something different and discover this hidden gem: Tramkade. This old mixing factory is now restored as a cultural destination for music, art, food and design with amazing street art. This colorful industrial area offers galleries, stores and restaurants, but is also a key spot for cultural events and festivals.
Looking for some buzz? The Markt, Uilenburg and, our favorite, the Korte Putstraat are the hotspots in the city where you hang out for coffee, beer and a ‘bitterbal’. This is where you will experience the Burgundian culture of Den Bosch. Restaurants, cafes and terraces are always packed, even when it rains.
Walk by the prominent City Hall located on the Markt, which was used as a royal building for parties and receptions back in the days. Within the distinctive Moriaan building, built in 1220 and commissioned by Duke Hendrik van Brabant, you can find the tourist information point for more tips and information about our charming city.
Museums
Catch art and design in the ‘Museumkwartier’ where our two favorite museums are housed: Het Noordbrabants Museum and the Design Museum Den Bosch.
Het Noordbrabants Museum shows the impressive works of famous Dutch artists from Brabant: Vincent van Gogh, Jan Sluijters and Jheronimus Bosch. This implacable museum offers art, history and changing exhibitions during the year.
The Design Museum presents stimulating and refreshing exhibitions of design from the past, present and future. You will find a diverse collection of jewelry and unique ceramics of designers and artists from the 20th and 21st century and design pieces of e.g. Pablo Picasso and Gijs Bakker and new talents.
Other art museums to explore are the Jheronimus Bosch Art Museum, located in an old church, and Museum Slager: housing the artworks of the Bossche family Slater consisting of 8 artists from 3 generations.
